The North Sea’s Wadden Sea is the biggest Wadden Sea of the world and the biggest ecosystem of its kind. The biological performance in the Wadden Sea is twenty times higher than in the tropic rain forests. To protect diverse habitats sustainably in this unique natural area, the Wadden Sea became a national park in 1982. In 2009, Unesco recognised the Wadden Sea as a World Heritage Site.
The national park preserves biological diversity and the natural habitats of the species-rich plant and animal life in the Wadden Sea, while allowing sustainable experience of this original and precious natural landscape.

A Unesco biosphere reserve is defined as an area that is in its natural and cultural characteristics unique in the world. Biosphere reserves represent model regions for sustainable development, in which the coexistence of man and nature is exemplarily tested and implemented. The “Lower Saxon Wadden Sea” was declared as a Biosphere Reserve by the Unesco in 1992, and has been under international protection ever since.
